Legend has it that Louis Armstrong was in a 1926 recording session of the track "Heebies Jeebies," when he suddenly dropped his sheet music. Rather than stop, he began improvising the melody with nonsensical syllables to keep the recording going.
While earlier vocalists in blues and jazz may have toyed with scatting, it was he who popularized the style, making his voice an equal partner to the instrument. Check out this cool amateur video of Abe scat singing Sweet Georgia Brown.
The stuff that the 1930’s and 40’s were made of…heavy metal automobiles and heavy harmonica blues.
Take a trip back in time with us in this video and check out how Abe’s nostalgic sound blends so well with the tone of this restored 1930’s-40’s film.
